Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART)/
With the Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART) having no precedence, building the world’s first dual-purpose tunnel came with tough challenges. In its maiden joint venture project, MMC-Gamuda learned first-hand of the risks associated with extreme karstic limestone terrain in Kuala Lumpur. While the soil condition was erratic and highly fragile, it had to ensure the construction process caused minimal disruption to the busy surroundings of Kuala Lumpur.
The hard work was ultimately recognised in international stages, with wins including a British Construction Industry Award (BCIA) for Best International Project. A novel concept to solve the recurring flash floods crippling Kuala Lumpur’s metropolis, the tunnel could double as a water storage capacity of up to 3 million m³, diverting excess floodwater from Sungai Klang and Sungai Ampang. The SMART 3 km-motorway tunnel meanwhile consists of a double-deck structure to cater to traffic from opposing directions.
